NEW ZEALAND -- South Island is a pure pleasure to visit with spectacular landscapes, friendly people, good food and outstanding wine. Incredibly varied, small townships each with great architecture and culture stimulate the senses. There's even a French costal town, Akaroa.
We were surprised about the amount of mature pine trees (non-native). Post war, the government employed people to establish pine plantations to stimulate the economy and reduce unemployment.
